Drag Racing Alarm Clock

Cheap Drag Racing Alarm Clock Review

I built myself a 1:18 scale Drag Racing Track Diorama. The only thing missing was a Staging Light Christmas Tree. I searched all over the internet to find something that would work but all I found was a couple different styles that were basically composed of a vertical stick with horizontal sticks glues across it to form a tree. Then little lights or paint was applied to the ends of the sticks to simulate the staging lights. To say the least they were pathetic. Then I stumbled across the Drag Racing Alarm Clock. I read other reviews and decided that it might just fill the need I wanted. So I ordered one from Amazon. When it arrived I was like a kid at Christmas time. I could hardly wait to get it open and see how well it would work with my diorama. For my diorama I did not need the Alarm Clock but I had to make due with what I could find. Although the clock looks a bit big in the middle of my track, you just have to use your imagination and pretend it's not there. Other than that the Drag Racing Alarm Clock works great in my diorama. The clock keeps very good time and when you push the button on the base of the unit the staging lights actually come on and work down the Christmas tree just like the real thing. To make things even better there is a sound effect of a car burning out. Then a slight pause while you hear the engines running. The Staging lights come on and work down the pole. Amber, Amber, Amber, Green. And then you hear the cars leave the line as they race down the track. It's great. I understand that this is the same thing that happens when the alarm goes of on the clock. But since I am not using it for an Alarm Clock I can't really address that function. It has a snooze bar and light so you can see the clock at night. The staging pole on top of the Clock is not made of a very heavy material and can break real easy. So I would not suggest this Item for a small child. The sound effects are great but a little suppressed or muffled. I would have preferred something a little better. But then you can't expect to much from a clock this small. It does a pretty good job for it's size. Over all I am pleased with the Clock. If you want this clock to last for a long time I would suggest you don't let the kids play with it. It will break easy. I hope this review helps you in your decision.

Comparison of Squeezebox Radio and Aluratek Internet Alarm Clock

Ease of Installation

Both units are easy to install, IF you have experience with networks. If you have to call the Geek Squad to install a new computer on your network, these both may be a challenge for you and you probably should seek assistance. Note the power button for the Aluratek is on the BACK.

Entry of 128 bit WEP keys on my secure wireless LAN was easy and intuitive, and yes, you can see the entire key as you enter it. Squeezebox' is entered combination-lock style and Aluratek's is entered cell phone style. The units remember this key if they are unplugged. Once the key is entered, the units will then both add themselves to your LAN. Wired LANs can skip this step.

Each unit works in conjunction with an online web site to add internet radio stations. Once you enter your user name and password into the unit, the web site will then immediately add all favorites on the site into your radio. Note: when you enter the MAC address into V-tuner to set up your account for the Aluratek, you have to use the numbers above the keyboard. Numbers on the number pad to the right may look the same but will NOT work.

Each unit can play internet radio, play your own music collection, and in addition, the Aluratek has a built in FM tuner and can play music from a "thumb drive."

Aluratek has a remote control as standard, and a remote is an option on the Squeezebox.

Differences

Audio quality is better by far on the Squeezebox. The internal speaker sounds pretty good for a small radio. The speaker on the Aluratek is just what you would expect from a 4 inch clock radio speaker: OK but not great. At higher volumes it is pretty bad. Connecting external speakers to either makes either sound excellent and overcomes this difference.

The Aluratek has a built in FM tuner, in addition to being able to tune local radio stations that have a streaming service on the net. This tuner is not very good even set to higher sensitivity: it had trouble picking up a local station that comes in clearly on other tuners, and even then it was scratchy and only in MONO.

The Squeezebox is able to work with Squeezebox Server running on my NAS and therefore a constantly running PC is not required. The Aluratek requires a PC running Windows Media Player, or similar streaming source in order to play music from your local PC collection.

Fit and finish and general tactile feel of the Squeezebox Radio is better. The Squeezebox also can accommodate an optional battery pack making it truly portable.

The Squeezebox has 6 preset pushbuttons. I got this unit for my non-technically inclined and visually impaired mother. But with only power, volume, and 6 station preset buttons she can easily operate it. The Aluratek however has nested menus which are more confusing.

The clock display on the Aluratek is bigger and more easily read without your glasses. The clock display on the Squeezebox is smaller, only runs when the power is off, and gets miniscule when the radio power is turned on. The clock stays on when the Aluratek is powered up. The display is REALLY bright. It will light up a whole room at night. Only the duration of the backlight is adjustable, not the intensity. A piece of plastic window tint fixed this; get the "static cling" kind.

The Aluratek is designed to be a clock radio. The buttons on the top are bigger and easier to locate in the dark or when you are sleepy. The buttons on the Squeezebox are on the front and smaller (and more numerous).

The Squeezebox updated itself immediately upon connection (took an hour!) but the Aluratek update is completely manual. I tried to do this but was unsuccessful; maybe this was because it already had the latest firmware. Some way to know the version on the website would be nice, then you could compare that to what is onboard the radio.

The Aluratek comes with extensive documentation in English and French: quick start guide, manual and a CD, but the Squeezebox comes with only a brief quick start guide.

Overall impression

I give the Aluratek 4 stars, taking off points for the poor FM radio, non-adjustable backlight and mediocre sound quality on the internal speaker. The Squeezebox Radio gets 5 stars...see my other review of the Squeezebox Classic and Whole House Music Systems.

I originally purchased this as a gift for my aged mother who has difficulty seeing a clock due to decreased vision. She has enjoyed this so much that I purchased another for her to keep in another room! She is constantly pleasing me with how much she uses it! I am thrilled with this product and highly recommend it!

Digital Zen Alarm Clock

Cheap Digital Zen Alarm Clock Review

I have owned the "triangle" version of this concept for a number of years now, and have always enjoyed the process of a "gradual awakening" each morning.

A little while back, I received the digital version of this clock as a present. As I started playing with it, I discovered that this is not only the same great idea for waking up in the morning; there are a number of added features which give it much more versatility than the triangle version.

I use this particular clock primarily while working in my home office, where I have it set to chime on the hour. If I want to spend time working on a number of different projects during the course of a morning or afternoon, I set the built-in timer function to remind me (gently) when I need to wrap-up my current project and move on to the next one.

This clock also has a display which can be set to stay on continuously (in AC mode). Sometimes, if I want to meditate in the evening hours, it allows me to keep the space lighting to a minimum, while making it easy for me to see the clock and turn the chime off when my session is complete.

I find both of my Zen Alarm Clocks to be a wonderful addition to my home and lifestyle. Now with the digital version, I have something that brings more quality to my "conscious" time.

Infinity Instruments The Inca - In/Outdoor Clock with Slate Mosaic Border

Cheap Infinity Instruments The Inca - In/Outdoor Clock with Slate Mosaic Border Review

Item advertised as indoor/outdoor. Came well packaged. Heavy. Seems solid. Attractive. Nice color scheme around outer edge will go with most decor. Prblm: Not really for outdoor use. I wanted to use it outside on a pool fence, fully exposed to the elements. When clock arrived, sticker on unit said not for use in direct sunlight. Isn't that "outdoor" use? Apparently, per seller (not Amazon), indoor/outdoor really means indoor or outdoor under protection (covered porch, maybe fully exposed but in shade all the time). So I can not use it as I had hoped. Listing in Amazon should be more precise. So use caution when considering purchase and intended use. Note that there is a return policy that I could have used, but frankly I did not feel like going through the effort and time.

Springfield Precision Instruments 14-Inch Cast Aluminum Contours

Cheap Springfield Precision Instruments 14-Inch Cast Aluminum Contours Review

We bought this clock to put on a wall near our new hot tub, which has redwood-colored trim. We live in a pueblo style home in the Southern desert in New Mexico and the clock and its color are perfect. As the directions stated, the thermometer part of the clock is not accurate when in direct sunlight, but it is in shade by late afternoon when we normally use the hot tub. We had a recent snowstorm of several inches and I was curious how it would weather that sort of weather since the hands are free-standing (not enclosed), but it did not miss a beat. I am assuming it is unbreakable too as it is made from cast aluminum. It is large enough to easily see from the hot tub, as well. We are very pleased with the purchase.

Our first order arrived with a normal appearance, but did not work at all. Here is an enormous thanks to Amazon, as they shipped a replacement at no extra charge on December 22 and it arrived December 24! The replacement worked well. For an expensive wall clock it has a nice appearance and keeps time well.
