Cheap River City Clocks Eight Day Hunter's Cuckoo Clock with Hand-carved Oak Leaves, Animals, Rifles, and Buck - 20 Inches Tall - Model # 819-20 Review

I don't understand what the company was thinking when they put together this clock. First, I should preface by saying I own a decent number of clocks...roughly 35 or so. Most are vintage to antique including several cuckoo clocks. I wasn't expecting the quality of an antique or older cuckoo but was rather hoping for a nice modern equivalent since there was an open spot on the clock wall. When this came on sale I figured I'd give it a chance since it appeared the company has made an effort to reproduce many of the popular vintage cuckoo styles. It is supposedly made in Germany and the carvings are of a decent quality. There are several nice touches - modern but ultra convenient including small pads to keep the clock from bumping the wall etc..

The clock arrived promptly and in good condition - it was well packed and easy to finish the assembly (parts were removed to protect it during shipping). Upon first turning it on a small adjustment had to be made to the gong/hammer which seemed to have shifted a slight bit during shifting. The size is nice although the 20 inche measurement is NOT the size of the box but rather the tip/tip measurements including pendulem.

Also, the clock is a true 8 day - not one day like most cuckoos. Winding once a week is much more convenient and often an idication of a slightly better clock. So...what is my complaint? Plain and simple - the antlers on the deer are not carved whatsoever but rather plastic. Yes - you read that right - plastic inserts! Everything else on the clock is in keeping with a historic cukoo - nice wood everywhere, carving etc...except the horns of the antler. I was so disgusted by the plastic antlers I nearly sent it back for a refund - except the rest of the clock is quite decent. No, you cannot actually tell they are plastic just by looking at them - you must actually touch it to discern the plastic...but they are plastic just the same. I guess the good is they will not be prone to break or damage...still, I would have prefered wood. All in all, a nice clock with a cheap plastic antler. Still, it filled the space, the price was right and the rest of the clock is decent. I'm going to ask a carver friend to create some antlers for me...just know what you are buying.
